Saturday, May 6th – Our Favorite Hike

Coronation Day: We watched the Coronation (should that be capitalized?) of King Charles. The Brits know how to do ceremony. God Save The King! (Sorry, Mianne. Bloody monarchy!)

Kentucky Derby Day: Didn’t I used to do that? Well, about 40 times, but this year not only did I not go again, but I transferred the tickets to my friend Edward in Louisville who shared them with me. So, 15-1 winner who was still eligible for non-winners of two races. I never would have picked him. I’m glad for Javier Castellano though.

Darkness into Light Day: In Ireland, anyway. “Join us for the most important sunrise of the year and help raise much needed funds for suicide prevention.” In Dingle, the walk started (like most places) at 4:15 am. No thank you.

We skipped our morning walks altogether to avoid running across dead bodies from the Darkness into Light walk. But it was (mostly) a beautiful sunny day. So after watching King Charles get the crown, we headed out for our favorite walk along the cliffs at Clogher Strand.

On the way I stopped briefly at the overlook to the Dingle Beaches (one of my most favorite views). You’ve already seen the view, but the surf action was at its best. Not so much crashing waves, but colorful none the less.

The walk is a loop walk – going out along the cliff and then back via a dusty, boring farm track and the busy main road. We do halfway out and then back the same way. Always a good view that way. We had nice sun on the way out, but it had become mostly cloudy on the way back, so the pictures are almost all on the way out.

First are two pictures from the cliff of the Great Blasket Island. As you can see, it’s hazy, but I like the effect.

Here are the rest of the pictures (a lot) from the walk. Spot the happy face. Spot the wild flowers. Spot me in my new blue Irish cap (No, it’s not the happy face I mentioned). Spot more views of the Great Blasket. Spot views of the Three Sisters Mountains. Spot the other odd walker on the trail. Spot contemplative Elaine. Is this the most picturesque walk in the world? It could well be.

After the walk I needed a nap, so it was back home. I’m grilling a steak tonight, so I think we are in for the day. It could be that rare Guinness-free day for me. No worries, there will be cocktails and wine with dinner.

And there was. With a nice cheese platter. We sat outside in the sunshine for awhile. My steak was, as usual, deliciously barbequed by moi. Yum. Elaine had BBQ pork sausages. Tomorrow night it will be lamb sausages again. We have three more restaurant reservations before we pack out for the road trip to Donegal this coming Friday..

  1. Love the homemade postcard, marvelous!

And the pix are fantastic each day, how many days until Donegal? Where do you stay there?

I didn’t even follow the horses, or watch the Derby 9 deaths over the track this week, 2 of them are derby day, very sad. I’m just so turned off by it, and it was a big part of my life too.

    1. We leave for Donegal Friday. We stay in a little town called Dungloe in a rented cottage for seven nights. One night in Ballina on the way there.

  2. We taped the Coronation and started watching around 6:00 pm. After putting it on hold a couple of times (to grab food and beverages), we finished watching at 1:00 am. Yes, the Brits certainly do know how to do ceremony. So much history, so much tradition.

Like Barb, we also chose not to watch the Kentucky Derby. After all those deaths and scratches, it no longer had any appeal. It’s the first time we missed it.

I can see why your cliff walk along Clogher Strand is your favorite. Absolutely stunning views. It was nice to see your beautiful smile again, Elaine. And thank you guys for the postcard.

  3. Postcard arrived. I agree with Sue, the cliff walking views are amazing. Could never tire of that walk. You, in your new hat and Elaine look great. Glad all is going well for you two.

  4. AB FAB photos. Very wise of you to take the half hike and turn around preserving those beautiful views. The whitecaps on the water certainly make for a breathtaking sight. Recognized the beach with a down slope entrance where we had a breezy picnic in 2008.

Too bad you weren’in Donegal for the coronation. King Charles Spaniel and Queen Rottweiler are Theit monarchs.

Celtics are looking good. 2-1 against the 76ers. Watching 4th game in Philly. Fingers crossed. 🏀

    Love to you both ❤️

    Derby? What Derby? 😎

  5. Gorgeous pics. Love the grey tones in the hazy Great Blasket photo. Suitable for framing.

    Monarchy? What Monarchy?

    1. Drat him. At least the Celtics are doing better than the chocking Bruins. You’ll be happy to know Kerry beat Clare in Munster irish football final. Now on to the nationsls.

  6. I don’t comment every day but I do enjoy reading your blog every day so thank you for the narrative and the pictures.

It sure seems like the town is very friendly. You know your way around all the restaurants and drinking establishments. I enjoy the cliffs and the wave pictures.

Todd and I made a quick driving trip to our favorite Florida beach for a week’s stay. We haven’t been here since 2019. We will mostly walk, ride our folding bikes, read, watch sunsets and visit with life long friends in Nearby Tampa..

Hi to Elaine. You both look good in the pictures. Jackets though on your walks.

    1. Dingle is very friendly. All comments, long and short are appreciated. Jackets almost always required – high temp we have had is about 60 degrees and it’s usually windy.
