In 2010 we spent five weeks driving the length and breadth of New Zealand, hitting the North Island, the South Island, and lesser known Stewart Island. We started in Auckland, drove south through Rotorua (Maori Country), and then visited Wellington at the south end of the North Island. After a car ferry to the South Island, we visited Blenheim (the heart of NZ wine country) and drove west to Westport eventually turning south by Mount Cook. Milford Sound on the South Island , pictured above, is one of the most picturesque places on earth. We ferried (without the car) for a visit to Stewart Island, a bird watcher’s paradise. Then we drove north through Dunedin to our final stop, Christchurch, a beautiful city before the devastating earthquakes that came the following year.
